Ancient and modern armour contrasted, Isaac Cruikshank, 1797

Ancient and modern armour contrasted, Isaac Cruikshank, 1797

A man in armour (left), his face covered by a closed visor, holding a shield and a tilting spear, faces an officer in light horse uniform, who stands in profile to the left with folded arms, looking at the armour-clad man. Between and slightly behind them stands a military officer wearing a large cocked hat and gorget, long tight pantaloons, with low shoes. He inspects the armoured man through a quizzing-glass. The subject was suggested by a visit to market bosworth, near bosworth field, where weapons and accoutrements are frequently dug up. 4 march 1797 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1797. Dimensions: Height: 237 mm; Width: 190 mm. Medium: paper. Collection: British Museum. Ancient and modern armour contrasted (BM 1927,0308.133)
