An English flagship becalmed saluting RMG PW7012, circa 1700

An english flagship becalmed saluting this may be a compositional drawing relating to one of van de velde’s late english period calms. On the left is a starboard bow view of an english two-decker becalmed. A flag flies from the mainmast and there are men furling the main topsail. She is firing a salute to port as a barge pulls away across her bow towards a galliot-rigged yacht seen starboard broadside in the centre. On the right there is a merchant ship at anchor with several boats near her. The drawing is unsigned. An english flagship becalmed saluting. Date: circa 1700. Dimensions: Sheet: 170 x 234 mm; Mount: 404 mm x 558 mm. Collection: Fine art.
