An english ship in a strong breeze
this drawing is included in robinson’s catalogue with less certainty than other drawings on blue-grey paper thought to be by van de velde. There is therefore a possibility that the drawing may be by another artist such as samuel scott who made similar drawings on blue-grey paper, some of which are in the national maritime museum’s collection. This possibility is strengthened by the fact that, by the appearance of the stern of the ship, the drawing would date from late in van de velde’s lifetime if were by him. The drawing is unsigned. An english ship in a strong breeze. Date: circa 1700. Dimensions: Sheet: 240 x 385 mm; Image: 236 x 379 mm; Mount: 404 mm x 556 mm. Collection: Fine art.
