View of the sea battle between the dutch and the french at tobago in 1676. The seas around the various islands of the caribbean was infamous for its pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1676 the netherlands despatched an expedition led by jacob binckes to make an end to this privateering. In 1677 this led to a showdown with a french squadron near the island of tobago. The battle, in which the dutch were badly defeated, is depicted in this historic print by romeyn de hooghe (1645-1708). Bottom left an inset showing the positions before the sea battle.
