Map of Brazil, Jacob van Meurs, 1671

Map of brazil. Brasilia. Flanking the cartouche on the left are indians subjugated by the europeans. The chart was also published in a. Montanus, 'de nieue en onbekende weereld', amsterdam 1671 and j. Nieuhof, 'gedenkwaerdige zee en lantreize', amsterdam 1682. Respectively: koninklijke bibliotheek, inv. Nr. 185 b 14 deel ii, after p. 358 and koninklijke bibliotheek, inv. Nr. 388 a 9 deel i, after p. 28. The chart is thought to have been compiled by krystof arciszeweski, a polish general in the service of the west-indische compagnie. Cf. Koninklijke bibliotheek, inv. Nr. 388 a 4 part i, after p. 28. The chart strongly resembles the map in joannes blaeu's atlas maior. The cartouches and decorations are different, however. Date: 1671. Dimensions: height: 36 cm (14.1 in); width: 29 cm (11.4 in). Medium: coloured engraving on paper. Collection: Koninklijke Bibliotheek. AMH-7748-KB Map of Brazil
