The chart is taken from a richly illustrated travel journal of a dutch trade delegation to the emperor of japan. The mapmaker was a preacher from schellingwoude, arnold montanus, who recorded the experiences related by members of the expedition and subsequently had them published by jacob van meurs in amsterdam in 1669.
