The painting, purchased in 1787–1788 by bishop h. Stroynowski as a work by honthorst, was in the tarnowski collection in dzików. An excellent example of the so-called painting caravaggionists, active in the netherlands (utrecht) and italy, followers of caravaggio - an artist who was one of the first to introduce artificial lighting into painting, using strong chiaroscuro effects to enrich the drama of the painting and give it some quasi-theatrical features. Dirck van baburen (around 1575 - 1624) also belonged to the group of dutch caravaggionists. The author of the tarnowski painting knew not only the works of baburen, but also terbrugghen (another painter from the group of utrecht caravaggionists). Perhaps he is the same as the artist who made a variation on terbruggen's painting esau selling his birthright, from around 1525 (raleigh museum, north carolina). In both paintings, the artist used the same type of lighting. The krakow painting also owes a lot to baburen's works, such as flight with daughters (private collection in paris) and the backgammon players (bamberg, residenzgalerie). The artist could have borrowed the entire compositional scheme from the latter painting. According to slatkes, the combination of various figures and types derived from baburen's work, as well as the similarity with the north carolina painting, seem to indicate that the artist may have worked in baburen and terbrugghen's studio. The theme of the painting was taken from the gospel of st. Mark (14; 66–72). Denial of st. Peter took place in the courtyard of the palace of the priest caiaphas, while christ was being interrogated by him. A soldier and a maid, recognizing peter, indicated that he was a disciple of christ. However, before the rooster crowed, peter, as predicted, denied it three times.
