Basel Woman Turned to the Right, Costume Study by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1523

Basel woman turned to the right, costume study. Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, 29 × 19. 7 cm, kunstmuseum basel. The purpose of holbein's pen-and-wash studies of women from this period is not known, though there is a strong emphasis on their clothes. The letters fhz are here have been discerned at the end of the bonnet ribbon (müller, p. 300). Date: circa 1523.
