The Hof van Zeeland in Middelburg, Adriaen van de Venne, 1644

The hof van zeeland on the abdijplein in middelburg. The hof is located in one of the former abbeys of middelburg. In 1574, after the city was conquered by the geuzen, it became the seat of the provincial government of zeeland. The clerk's office was located in the former bishop's residence to the left of the center aisle. The states and the committed councils met in the former chapter house, which was located on the floor of the building to the right of the central aisle. The official residence of the grand pensionary was located in st. Pieterstraat, behind the vice-admiral's home, the beginning of which is visible on the far left of the print. The princes of orange met in the transverse wing on the right. Copy after an (emblematic) print by adriaen pietersz. Van de venne from 1618, used in jacob cats' sileni alcibiadis (amsterdam 1619).
