The portrait, painted in 1609 or 1610, depicts archduchess maria maddalena of austria, wife of cosimo ii de' medici, grand duke of tuscany. The grand duchess, aged 20, was pregnant of her first or second child. The painting, with a matching portrait of her husband, was a present to king philip iii of spain and his wife margaret of austria, maria maddalena's older sister. The two paintings are recorded for the first time in 1612 in the royal alcázar of madrid.
