The equestrian portrait, which is in the museum and arrived in nikolaev in 1974 from the all-union production plant of the ussr ministry of culture, is one of the artist’s later portraits. It is also known from the history of the work that in 1913 the portrait was exhibited at an exhibition of sketches and studies of the society of travelling art exhibitions in moscow under the title “the tsar – liberator” (for bulgaria). During the preparation of the anniversary exhibition of i. E. Repin in 1936, the painting was apparently in the tretyakov gallery, but was not included in the exhibition. In i. E. Grabar’s monograph “repin” (moscow, 1937), the work was included as “tsar alexander ii” from the collection of p. P. Saurov in moscow. It was undoubtedly a commissioned work. The painting was created in 1913, the year of the 300th anniversary of the house of romanov. This painting was one of the preparatory sketches for a larger one – a portrait of one of the most respected tsars of the romanov dynasty. Object Type: painting. Date: 1913.
