A somp becalmed
a somp was a type of long barge built in the dutch town of enter and used extensively in the nearby province of friesland. It had a distinctively shaped bow, clearly visible in this drawing, and a lower-than usual rig. This study is cautiously attributed by robinson on the basis of comparison with similar, signed drawings by van de velde, the younger, in the louvre (818) and fitzwilliam museum (pd 796-1963). A somp becalmed. Date: circa 1675. Dimensions: Secondary support: 200 mm x 279 mm; Primary support: 120 mm x 200 mm; Mount: 318 mm x 481 mm. Collection: Fine art.
