A SHIP OF WAR, William Alexander, circa 1800

Drawing by william alexander, draughtsman of the macartney embassy to china in 1793. A ship of war pin-gee-na laying at anchor near ning-po. The rudder is lifted to preserve it while at anchor. Alexander noted that the artillery ports were false, as few ships of the chinese navy were equipped at that time with guns, and were used primarily for transporting troops. Image taken from the costume of china, illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings, published in london in 1805. Date: circa 1800.
