A right . honorable alias a sans culotte, Isaac Cruikshank, 1792

Fox stands full face, bisected by a vertical line from the centre of his forehead: on the (spectator's) left he is a ragged frenchman, holding up in his right hand a knotted bludgeon and singing "ca ira, ca ira, ca ira". On the right he is a neatly dressed englishman, singing "god save great george our king" and holding out a document inscribed 'association against levellers st georges hanover square'. The french half wears under his ragged coat a torn striped tricolour vest, with a belt in which a pistol is thrust. His eye glares fiercely, his mouth is drawn down, his hair is tousled. The english half of his face smiles, and he wears neatly powdered hair. His feet are planted on opposite sides of a piece of water between two cliffs, representing the straits of dover. Beneath the title is etched: 'how happy could i be with either were i but the chief of the throng. But da--n it as i can get niether i'll take either part of the song' 20 december 1792 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1792. Dimensions: Height: 368 mm (printed image); Width: 302 mm (printed image).
