Three men, each holding up an umbrella, meet and seem to find difficulty in passing. An officer, his hair in a long pigtail queue, walks (left to right), his umbrella held in his right hand and resting on his left shoulder. A lean man, holding his umbrella high, and with tasselled cane in his left hand, advances from the right. Between them, his umbrella resting on his right shoulder, a plainly dressed citizen stands full face, holding out his left hand as if to prevent a collision between the other two. A stone wall forms the background. 25 january 1782
