A LIKENESS FOR TOBACCO, Utagawa Yoshiiku, 1874

Colour woodblock print (23. 5 x 36 cm. ) seller's description: "from the popular "nishiki-e shinbun" series designed by printmaker utagawa yoshiiku; these narrative woodblock prints were issued as supplements to the tokyo nichinichi shinbun, the daily newspaper that yoshiiku co-founded during the early years of the meji restoration. Depicted here: the famous kabuki actor ichikawa danjuro ix, who is being visited by a westerner (yojin, i. E. "ocean person"). This backstage encounter involves the request for danjuro's photograph, in exchange for tobacco. Although not identified, the westerner is almost certainly the italian photographer adolfo farsari (depicted in reference image here), who was commercially active in japan during the 1870s and 80s. ". Date: 1874.
