A group of five fishing people
this is a study of five figures. Two women are depicted on the left, one standing and one seated. Three men are standing on the right, one of whom is carrying a large sack on his shoulder. The unsigned drawing’s stylistic resemblance to drawings of similar subjects from the milford collection, now at the nmm, suggest a tentative attribution to willem van de velde, the elder, and a date of about 1655, when the artist was particularly busy with grisailles, in which he introduced groups of people in the foreground. A group of five fishing people. Date: circa 1655. Dimensions: Primary support: 138 mm x 183 mm; Mount: 317 mm x 479 mm. Collection: Fine art.
