A German Albatros fighter aircraft RMG PV1009, William Lionel Wyllie, 1916

A german albatros fighter aircraft inscribed by the arist, as title. This is a study of an albatros d. Iii single seat fighter of the imperial german air force. The type entered squadron service on the western front in december 1916 and a small number were still operational on this front into september 1918. Wyllie represents the aircraft from astern and to its left, without a pilot in the cockpit. A tentative sketch of an aircraft wing, possiblly with a british roundel on the right, appears below under the inscription. Date: 1916. Dimensions: 253 mm x 354 mm. Collection: Fine art.
