The city of rome was in the 17th century a popular place for travellers, artists and scientists. For all those who lacked the money to visit rome, nicolaes visscher ii (1649-1702) provided a series of prints with the most important architectural and archeological highlights of the city engraved by willem swidde (c. 1660-1697). This print shows the popes palace, the vatican. The vatican was only inhabited during religious occasions. The real residence of the popes was the palace near the church of the laterans.
