The print shows the complex of pleasure gardens of enghien near brussels. The plan is part of a series of prints commissioned by nicolaes visscher ii (1649-1702) and engraved by romeyn de hooghe (1645-1708). A number of fountains were designed for this parc, this grotto fountain being one of those. With this grotto fountain, the garden architect tried to invoke an imaginary world of stones, shells and water. This was an imitation of nature linked with classical ideas about nature, art and above all love. Object Type: print. Date: circa 1685. Place of creation: Netherlands. Dimensions: 23 x 28 cm. Medium: copper engraving print. Collection: Koninklijke Bibliotheek. Atlas Van der Hagen-KW1049B11 075 9-Uitzicht vanaf de fonteingrotten op de triomfboog
