The dutch republic waged war with france and england between 1672 en 1678. Though the republiek settled for peace with england in 1674, the war with france would last another four years. During this war the siege of the german castle philipsburg took place. Philipsburg was conquered by the imperial army under field marshall charles of lorraine on 17 september 1676.
