Subject Composition, Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli, probably 1870-90

Four female figures, two seated and two standing, are shown. There is a close variant of the composition in the musée du petit palais, paris. During his stay in paris in the 1860s monticelli began to paint 'fêtes galantes', depicting elegantly-dressed women and men, often in parks, in the manner of french 18th-century paintings. This group is typical of such a scene. Object Type: painting. Date: probably 1870-90. Dimensions: height: 21 cm (8.2 in); width: 15.9 cm (6.2 in). Medium: oil on panel. Collection: National Gallery. Adolphe Monticelli, Subject Composition, ca. 1870-90
