Admiral edward russell, 1652-1727, 1st earl of orford
in 1692 russell commanded the anglo-dutch fleet at the five-day battle of barfleur and the destruction of the french fleet at la hogue following the action, thus halting louis iv’s invasion plans (see scenes of the battle: bhc0331, bhc0337 and bhc0338). Russell is shown wearing a grey velvet coat with gold embroidered button holes, and a brown full-bottomed wig. His right hand rests on a globe on the left, his finger indicating the north french coast. To the right on a table is a letter inscribed ‘to the right honourable the earle of orford’.
