"dear sir! a bad, long-lasting bout of influenza, which first affected my wife and which i also caught, meant that i had to put all work on hold, including answering your letter. I'm sure you'll excuse me. The photograph i'm sending you is about six years old. I don't have one that's younger. I'm glad that you like my writings. With the youth, enthusiasm for noble things must return to humanity. For a number of years, it has gone downhill quickly and alarmingly. The youth has the sacred duty to rekindle the purer flame and to continue to nourish it within themselves. I still hope that the german people will do so. Even if i cannot attribute great artistic value to my writings, that flame still burns in them, and where it is recognized and loved, it gives me joy for the sake of the cause. .
