Until 1987 known and exhibited as scene from racine: iphigénie en aulis. Then a series of five wall paintings by abildgaard were uncovered at nytorv 5, copenhagen. Each painting depicted a scene from an act of voltaire's le triumvirat, including a wall painting similar to this one, showing a scene from act four. Furthermore, in abildgaard's own book version of voltaire's play, the painter had made notes in each act in preparation for the paintings.
