The canvas represents the entry of the italian mercenary roger de flor into the city of constantinople at the head of his catalan mercenaries, who together were known as the great catalan company, to help the byzantine emperor andronikos ii palaiologos in his fight against the ottoman turks. In 1303 roger de flor entered the service of the aforementioned emperor with the purpose of helping him and commanding an expedition of 4,000 almogávars, 1,500 cavalry soldiers and 39 ships sent by frederick ii of sicily, (the great catalan company). And upon entering the capital of the byzantine empire, roger de flor paraded under the command of the almogavars, who had great esteem for him, before the emperor, and finding himself at the head of his men, he annihilated the genoese of constantinople and subsequently headed to anatolia and took the cities of philadelphia, magnesia and ephesus, repelling the turks as far as cilicia and the taurus (1304), and always in battles fought with numerical inferiority.
