Antonín lhota (january 2, 1812 kutná hora - september 10, 1905 volyn) was a czech painter and teacher. The painting shows a dying nicolaus copernicus. Antonín lhota graduated from the academy of fine arts in prague. His teachers were františek kristian waldherr and františek xaver kadlík. After a study stay in munich and vienna, in 1844 he returned to prague to the academy, where he worked as a proofreader for ten years. He then made another several-year trip around europe (italy, germany, vienna, participation in the international exhibition in paris). In 1867, he became a professor at the academy and, after the death of jan swerts, its director (later rector). He worked as a teacher until he was 75 years old. The main theme of lhot's paintings is history - secular and ecclesiastical, especially czech. In the early 1840s, together with hellich and javůrk, he was one of the founders of czech historical painting. In addition to his own works, lhota has great merit as a teacher. He worked at avu for about 30 years (1844 – 53 and 1867 – 87) and during that time he educated a whole generation of artists. His pupils included václav brožík, františek ženíšek, mikoláš aleš, emanuel krescenc liška, bohumír roubalík, jakub schikaneder, maxmilián pirner, josef václav myslbek and others. From 1872 he was also the examiner for teacher candidates of hand drawing in czech (and partly also moravian) secondary schools. [1].
