a potbellied, middle-aged bourgeois introduces a young man (his nephew?) to a pretty young woman, who is his new wife. The nephew is very surprised. In the background, a woman, hands in the pockets of her apron, observes the funny scene. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "he stood up, he took his place again and said:-- this is our business, my dear aunt. Because you will be a little like my aunt. . . -- shut up, bad subject!. Said brigitte, and speak. . . -- i will tell you things bluntly, and notice that i compromise myself by telling you them, [. . . ]" [excerpt from les petits bourgeois, by honoré de balzac]
