this painting is linked to the annexation of alsace-lorraine by the young german empire in 1871. The artist shows a chained heroine awaiting her release, based on the classic model of andromeda, in a post-romantic and post-ingresque style. The whirlwind of the wind turns and flies the drape into a black veil forming the alsatian knot whose symbolism refers to the hope of deliverance from this region. The year of châtillon's death in 1908, the magazine la france illustrée presented on its front page the engraving of the painting mentioned above.
