Scene of a ship being ensnared and damaged by a "colossal octopus" (according to denys-montfort, experienced by french seamen off angola's coast), but relabeled as a kraken here in the engraving in robert hamilton md's book. Sepia in former usage included octopi, not just cuttlefish. Date: 1839.
