The battle of møn was fought between a swedish and a danish squadron, beginning in the afternoon of may 31, 1677 and continuing the next day. The painting shows a swedish ship of the line (to the right) which has lowered its colours. A danish boat is approaching. The surrending swedish ship is probably the amarant, flagship of admiral erik sjöblad, and the danish ship of the line in the centre is probably the christianus quintus, flagship of admiral niels juel.
