Dimensions: plate edge: h 568 mm × w 2597 mmexplanationthis object has been virtually combined for the sake of better presentation, but physically consists of separate parts. This whole was originally intended as part of the so-called maas map from 1666, published under the title 'rotterodamum hollandiae urbs celeberrima et situ portibusque mercaturae opportunissima. Ao. 1665'. Although the year 1665 is in the title, archival research shows that the map was not completed until 1666 (see documentation). This map consisted of (from top to bottom): - a title strip (printed from one plate); - a large cityscape of rotterdam (printed from six plates); - a map of the maas (printed from four plates) with cityscapes of maassluis, delfshaven, delft, schiedam, den briel and vlaardingen on the left and right (printed from three plates, two on each plate); - (possibly) a description of rotterdam in letterpress (at least four different versions are known). The map was initially published by jacob quack. Jan houwens (i) provided another edition in 1698 at least (dated in the description of rotterdam, he may have published the map earlier with a different version of the description). As far as can be determined, the only change houwens made to the plates is 'jan houwens excudit', on the ship at the bottom right of the cityscape of rotterdam (see rp-p-1894-a-18354. F). The current copy was published by houwens. Because it is also possible that houwens published the maas map before 1698, it is not possible to determine when exactly the current copy was published.
