iconographic description:
the explanation of pl. (p. 654) states: “france, crushed by the monstrous system of march 13, seeks support in the press. – does the town hall, placed in the background of the drawing, mean that we will be forced to return there? – we think so. ". France, personified by a woman dressed in a drape, places her hands on newspapers placed on a press. A character with a disproportionate head, embodying the "march 13 system" (casimir périer's government having started on march 13, 1831; ended on may 16, 1832) is mounted on the shoulders of france and shakes a small swift. In the background is the paris city hall. The pl. Shows france seeking support from the press, threatened by the government of the july monarchy flouting freedom of expression and republican principles. According to the pl. , this situation cannot continue. Instigation to upset the order of things, undoubtedly by a new revolution. The pl. Also makes a small allusion to the principle of non-intervention of the country in external affairs (one of the nets of the martinet embodying “peace at all costs”).
