In 1887–1888, vereshchagin traveled around russian cities. He visited yaroslavl, rostov, and kostroma. The artist studied ancient russian architecture and collected antique household items. Observing the leisurely pace of life in provincial towns, vereshchagin was especially interested in the fates of the people he met during his travels. In 1895, the artist published the book illustrated autobiographies of several unremarkable russian people, whose heroes were the models for his works, including the old butler. Object Type: painting.
