The sketch represents the execution of general torrijos and his companions on the beaches of malaga. General josé maría de torrijos y uriarte (1791-1831) who became captain general of valencia, field marshal and minister of war during the liberal triennium (1820-1823). After the return to absolutism, he revolted and was the victim of an ambush prepared by the governor of malaga, vicente gonzález moreno, who had assured him of the triumph of the rebellion. On december 11, 1831, at half past eleven in the morning, and without prior trial, general torrijos and 48 of his companions were shot on the beaches of malaga. It is considered a masterpiece of historical painting of the spanish 19th century and was commissioned in 1886 directly by the liberal government of práxedes mateo sagasta (1825-1903), during the regency of queen maría cristina of austria, as an example of the defense of freedoms for future generations.
