historical commentary:
this bacchante holding out her cup is a study for "autumn", one of the four "seasons", oval paintings that watteau painted between 1712 and 1716 for the dining room of pierre crozat's hotel, rue de richelieu, in paris. This painting, unfortunately lost, is known to us through the engraving in return by etienne fessard. Watteau executed, with a view to this decoration, a series of drawings of superb quality, such as the "buveuse" from the cognacq-jay museum or the "bacchus", kept at the louvre museum, another study for "autumn" (paris, louvre museum, department of graphic arts, inv. 28980).
