A Ruined Temple, Pierre-Antoine Demachy, between 1725 and 1775

A Ruined Temple, Pierre-Antoine Demachy, between 1725 and 1775

This architectural painting is the synthesis of two genres, scenography or the art of ingenious and complex decorations, of which servandoni, the master of demachy, was then the undisputed specialist, and ideal ruins, popularized by pannini, who were to have such a great influence on the development of the landscape in the second half of the 18th century with, among others, hubert robert. This imaginary ruin, seen from a fleeting perspective, thus becomes the sole subject of the reception piece and the artist is judged on his virtuosity and his ability to impress the spectator. Demachy would later be appointed professor of perspective at the academy. Object Type: painting. Genre: architectural painting. Date: between 1725 and 1775. Dimensions: height: 161 cm (63.3 in) ; width: 129 cm (50.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Louvre Museum. Un temple en ruine Demachy
