Commissioned by the english collector and patron, then living in florence, lord bristol, this painting is inspired by sophocles' tragedy philoctetes. Wounded and abandoned by his people on the island of lemnos, philoctetes survives thanks to the weapons of hercules that ulysses and neoptolemus come to snatch from him to use against the trojans.
