iconographic description:
from early to late, an eclipse: the pear gradually passes in front of the july sun of the three glorious “27. 28. 29” july. In the center of the composition, a boat carrying the ministers (then without a government since the death of périer on may 16, 1832) launching “ditress signals” and an “appeal to legitimists”. The boat must face the danger of the rocks of “liberty of the press” and “belgium”. Despite the zeal that talleyrand puts at the bottom on the left to anchor the boat with his “protocols” and “protocols // belgium // no. 1,500”, it seems adrift. Baron louis throws coins (which he draws from a box of “empr […] [loorns?]”) to the sea monsters supposed to represent the press (we recognize in particular the figaro with his hat), soult prays with his candle, d’argout launches the appeals with his flag, lobau pumps the water invading the boat with his clyster syringe, montalivet holds the “ancreor [de] misericorde” for a “change of ministers”, rigny (or is it louis-philippe?) calculates the path with a measuring instrument and a compass indicating “midi” and “north”. Dupin is on the far right, and barthe nails a label to the boat bearing the inscription “state of // siege”. In the distance to the left looms the city of paris. The pl. Is amused by the various means found by members of the government to save the july monarchy. But in the long term, she predicts the perdition of the regime, just like this boat whose sinking she imagines with almost certainty. Person / character represented:
soult, nicolas-jean de dieu; louis-philippe i, king of the french; bachasson, marthe camille, count of montalivet; dupin, andré marie jean-jacques (known as dupin elder); cruciani, françois; barthe, felix; mouton, georges, count of lobau; argout, antoine maurice apollinaire d', baron
