iconographic description:
a young woman in negligee (visible corset and white petticoats) turns her back on a young man, who passionately embraces her and kisses her neck. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "she was of medium height, threatened with obesity, but quite arched and well built. Morally, she fully possessed the simpering and the quarrels, the condiments and the chatter of her profession; she gave them a particular flavor by playing childhood and slipping philosophical mischief into the middle of her laughter. Apparently ignorant, thoughtless, she was very strong on discounting and on all commercial jurisprudence. " [excerpt from a daughter of eve, by honoré de balzac]
