iconographic description:
a young woman adjusts her hat in front of her psyche with the help of another lady while a middle-aged man, standing behind them, waits. He holds the young woman's colorful stole. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "the countess examined the landscape and kept a calm countenance, showing that impenetrable expression that women who are determined to do anything know how to take on. She wiped her eyes as if she had been crying, and absent-mindedly played with the long pink ribbon on her belt. Nevertheless, despite her apparent confidence, she could not help but shudder as she saw her venerable benefactor standing before her, his arms crossed, his face pale, his forehead severe. " [extract from le colonel chabert, by honoré de balzac]
