iconographic description:
a couple stands arm in arm, facing each other. The young woman is dressed extravagantly in a mass of frills, ribbons and other veils. The man on his arm lowers his nose, his face is dark and his clothes drab. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "then, after ensuring that her grandchildren were gone, she added: - i am mistress of my property, do not force me to compensate agathe in my will for any bad reception. - do you believe, madame, replied hochon in a soft voice, that at my age i do not know the childish and honest civility. . . You know well what i mean, you sly old man, be kind to our guests, and remember how much i love agathe. " [excerpt from la rabouilleuse, by honoré de balzac. Themes / subjects / places represented:
