De becquet, rue furstemberg n°6. » [printer]; in the image, bottom right, signature: “jj. Grandville // ae. Desperet” [jean-jacques grandville and auguste desperet, designer] inscription - on the left are the newspapers defending the government: the “figar […] [figaro]”, covered with his hat and turning his back, the “moniteur” universel, wearing a pear-shaped hat and a dress decorated with a crowned pear and a human figure, as well as two fleur-de-lis. Viennet meditates on a text. His garment bears the title of some of his writings: “epitre [to the chiffoniers]”, “[ode to] // mu […] [mules] // of // [don] miguel” iconographic description: in a medieval-style joust, two opponents face each other. The incarnation of the press, in the guise of a man of the people, soberly dressed, mounted on a lion, has just defeated louis-philippe using the spear of “freedom of the // press” (in the form of a large feather). The king then falls from his mount, which is a rooster. His helmet, in the movement of the fall, covers his face. His stomach is covered with a garment marked “chart […] [charte]”. His spear breaks. The end with which the king intends to strike is decorated with a hand of justice, while at the other end is a dagger. His shield is decorated with an umbrella topped with a top hat decorated with the tricolor cockade. Behind are a crisscrossed syringe (evoking lobau's repressive measures) and a pair of scissors (evoking the censorship measures put in place by the government). A rabbit's head and a cat's head (symbols of cowardice and deceit) complete this decor. The town hall, at the back of the composition, is decorated with flags. On the sides of the space provided for the fight are two stands, the left one containing the king's supporters (we can recognize, from left to right: thiers stretching out his arm, dupin waving a bell, lobau stabbing his heart with an enema syringe, soult in the background, d'argout letting his arms hang on the palisade, guizot stretching out his arms), the right one containing those of freedom of the press (one can identify the figure of liberty wearing the phrygian cap decorated with the tricolor cockade and waving a flag and a laurel wreath). The first stand displays a banner decorated with a pear, while at the top of a mast of the second fleet a flag decorated with the sun of july (bearing the inscription "27 28 // 29"). The foreground tribune contains the supporters of each party: on the left, viennet, "le moniteur" and "le figaro". Next, “the // caricature” blowing into a horn. He wears a fool's hat with bells and feathers. The “charivari” blows into a horn made from a copy of the newspaper (“chari // vari”). He wears a hat with bells, bells around his neck, and bangs on kitchen utensils hanging from his clothes. Another character, with glasses, plays the violin (aubert?). In the center are characters who have come to witness the scene. In the background, on the left, a fort on which a tricolor flag flies, and to the right the vendôme column with, at its top, a statue of napoleon (a new statue of the emperor, as a small corporal, by charles émile seurre, was placed at the top of the column on july 28, 1833, in the presence of louis-philippe).
