On the wreck of the sinking hourque matutina, lit by a torch held by the thief ave-maria, doctor geestemunde reads to the contrite comprachicos the handwritten confession concerning the kidnapping and mutilation of gwynplaine. This oil painting by georges-antoine rochegrosse served as a model for the engraving by fortuné méaulle reproduced on page 137 of victor hugo's novel, l'homme qui rit, in the édition hugues (1886).
