The massacre of queen anacaona and her subjects. Original engraving probably by jodocus van winghe, published in 1598 in the brevissima relacion de las casas. The spanish burn a building full of native americans; the noble native american woman is hanged from a tree. In the background, spaniards pursue the natives on horseback. After a reception celebrating the arrival of the governor of hispaniola, nicolás de ovando, queen anacaona's entourage was burned alive. In deference to her rank, she was hanged. Date: 1 January 1598.
