legend - on the front, at the bottom, printed in ink, verses: "these virgins, instead of watching, / while waiting for the celestial hope, / waste time dozing, / their laziness is so manifest. // constrained to their own good, / by weakness, or by nonchalance; / they consider nothing, / and have neither care nor foresight. // while luxury and play / charm these poor foolish; / their lamps without oil and without fire, / are pale-mesle overturned. // thus their debauched spirit, without having neither guide, nor lighthouse, / in the darkness of sin, / by its own fault goes astray. iconographic description:
mad virgins seated in an interior, dozing in front of the hearth. They hold screens. The chest of drawers carpet is decorated with a festoon, and the furniture supports chinese vases and a basket of flowers. On the table in the foreground on the right, a small open book leans on a terrestrial globe. On the back wall hang paintings with secular subjects: venus and love, a gallant scene, adonis going hunting; the mantelpiece still shows venus and cupid.
