iconographic description:
a man of the people, handsome and robust, takes a shovelful of deputies, which are in a wheelbarrow to the left of the composition, and throws it on a rack "as one does with earth that one wants to sift" (in explanation). Most of them, considered bad, do not pass through the cage and fall to the ground. The others, much fewer in number, judged worthy and pure, pass through the fence, and can take the path to the pantheon, visible in the background to the right. Among those waiting in the wheelbarrow, we can undoubtedly recognize soult, from behind, and guizot (?) holding the banner of the “221. ” deputies. It is dupin who is on the shovel, ready to be thrown onto the rack. Among those who could not get through, are recognizable argout with his pair of scissors, and lobau holding a clyster syringe, barthe falling on his back and holding the scales of justice. Thiers is thrown to the ground with his “history // of the // revolution”. The incarnation of the newspaper “le figaro” is face down on the ground. Only six people passed through: they were republican deputies. Another man of the people, for his part, performs the same operation, using a winnowing basket, on the political newspapers. The sheets passing through are the republican newspapers, in opposition to the regime: we find the “caricatu //re [caricature]”, the “temps”, the “chari // vari [charivari]”, the “tribune”, the “national”. While the sheets that remain in the basket are the newspapers defending the government: the “figaro”, the journal des “débats”, the “constitutionnel”, the “france // nouvelle”, the “moniteur”. On the same idea of large-scale screening of members of the government, cf. Pl. 98 (number 49; october 6, 1831). Person / character depicted:
thiers, adolphe; dupin, andré marie jean-jacques (known as dupin elder); barthe, felix; argout, antoine maurice apollinaire d', baron; soult, nicolas-jean de dieu; guizot, françois; mouton, georges, count of lobau
