Saint etienne
saint stephen is filled with the holy spirit and raises his angelic face towards the vision of the father and the son. In front of an impassive crowd, the two false witnesses prepare to throw the first stones. On the left, saul approves of the murder. Below, the arbors of roses and grapes perhaps allude to saint étienne (the basket of roses symbolizing his tomb and martyrdom) and to catherine budé, the deceased wife of étienne chevalier (the three bunches of grapes on his coat of arms). Date: 1452 — 1460.
