Lithograph reproducing a painting by jenny legrand dated 1821 entitled "interior of a barn" purchased by the duchess of berry. The original painting, painted on wood, measures 1 foot 6 inches high and 1 foot 9 inches wide. The lithograph was published in the collection “galerie de son altesse royale madame la duchesse de berry” with the following commentary:
"to the right and on the most advanced plane, we see a wheelbarrow still loaded with vegetables, a jug and a basket; around it are scattered gardening utensils,
of dairy, mannas and other objects of this kind. Beyond, an old woman,
sitting and beating butter in a churn, smiles as she looks at two
children placed on the left, one of whom, squatting on a sheaf of straw, licks grapes
stretched out on his bread, and the other, standing, seems to ask the first for the share of his
delicious snack. We discover next to the barn, and completely in the shadows, returning to the right, a stable of which we can only see the nursery. All the details of which this painting is composed are treated with remarkable care. The utensils, plants, and vegetables, which occupy a large part of it, are executed with a truth of imitation, a delicacy of work, which give to the works of mademoiselle legrand a merit of which unfortunately some of our young painters do not seem to sufficiently appreciate the value. Each object is studied and rendered faithfully, without cuteness and without constraint. The artist's brush is fine and precious, without being dry or cold. The color of this composition is bright and transparent. The general effect is harmonious. The children's faces are charming. There is naivety in the pose of the figures: we nevertheless regret that they are not drawn with more correctness. It is only in this place that this graceful work, which earned its author a gold medal, gives some support to criticism. " source. Object Type: lithograph. Date: 1822.
