portrait of eugène vidocq (1775-1857), adventurer and head of the security police. 19th century fashion. Historical commentary:
after a turbulent youth and several convictions, in 1809 vidocq became head of a security brigade, made up of former convicts. He resigned in 1827, was recalled in 1832, but left shortly after to found a private police force. His memoirs were published in 1828 and enjoyed enormous success. He inspired balzac for the character of vautrin in “splendors and misères of the courtisanes”. This portrait by devéria was reproduced as the frontispiece of the edition of "thieves", published in 1836. Acquisition mode: unknown acquisition mode
